Originally founded in 1623, this cozy community now serves as recreational and tranquil residential community. Known originally as "The Great Island", New Castle was the largest of several islands in the mouth of the Piscataqua River. New Castle is connected to the 'mainland' of New Hampshire via the causeway to Portsmouth and a drawbridge to Rye.

The current population of New Castle is about 1,100 residents, giving it a population density of about 1,276 people per square mile. Island residents love seaside living, and many activities and events are centered around being outdoors.  Great Island Common, a beloved local park, often serves as the epicenter of activity for visitors and residents alike.

New Castle residents have their own elementary school, Maude H. Trefethen Elementary School, which is currently ranked the best public elementary school within the state of New Hampshire.
